NRWCU win DCB County Championship for second year

The glorious summer sun which had graced the country earlier in the week was rudely ousted by torrential storms on the day of Germany's prestigious national Championship match between hosts Hessen and defenders Nordrhein-Westfalen. DCB Umpires Hoshang Kharadi and Keith Thompson had no option but to delay the start of the game by one hour and reduce both innings to 42 overs as the hosts worked hard to dry the sodden pitch and outfield.
Hessen won the toss and chose to bat first. Conditions made for uncomfortable batting and bowling and Hessen lost early wickets. At the two-hour mark, they were reduced to 93 for 7 with Rishi Pillai and Dilshan Rajudeen leading the NRWCU attack. Hessen showed great determination with a lower-order recovery led by Nafeesh Ahmed who top scored with 47 boosting the hosts to 176 for 9. An inspired tail-ender partnership of 34 between Samjeev and Zeeshan brought Hessen to a commanding total of 210 all out off 41.1 overs.
As lunch was served the heavens opened, delaying the start of the NRWCU innings. The umpires revised the overs to 40 with a target of 201 to win.
NRWCU openers Dilshan Rajudeen and Asif Khan wasted no time taking the fight to Hessen and punched the first over for 20 runs. The tempo could not last and at the half-way mark NRWCU were just behind the run-rate at 98 for 3 despite a careful 50 partnership between Naeem Ali and Kavin Paravi. Pasha's first over took 2 quick wickets leaving middle-order Satya Srinivas and captain Gehan Zain to steady the innings and inch the total higher with carefully run singles in another 50 partnership. Asad Khan and Shafraz Samsudeen, with some reckless and brazen running, reached the winning score with 11 balls to spare.
The awful weather and difficult playing conditions brought out the best in both teams, who showed character, determination and skill in a highly exciting Championship final. Thanks to hosts Frankfurt CC for their help, hospitality and support and to umpires Hoshang and Keith.
