Opening day wins for Guernsey, Germany, and Norway
Home team Guernsey the most emphatic winners during the opening round of matches.
Guernsey produced a comprehensive 141-run victory over Gibraltar to seize the initiative in the ICC European WCL Division 2 Championships. Lee Savident’s eye catching 91 guided the home team to 264-4 from their 50 overs.
In reply, Gibraltar floundered early, at one stage being 9-3. It was dismissed for 123 in the 44th over. The wickets were shared between Andrew Hutchinson, Jonny Warr, Jamie Nussbaumer, Jeremy Frith, Gary Rich and Tim Ravenscroft.

Elsewhere, there was a far tighter game involving Germany and France. Germany scored 172-9 with Farooq Ahmed leading the charge with 40. France fell short in its bid for victory, though while Arun Ayyavooraju (63) was at the crease. Time was on the French’s side, but the last pair needed 30 for victory and that was always too tall an order. It finished on 167 all out from 48.5 overs.
The third game on Day 1 was a hard fought contest between Norway and Israel at College Field. Norway was bowled out in the final over for 204. Damien Shortis top scored with 66. At 191-4 with nearly four overs remaining Israel looked in control, but number 11 Eliezer Sampson was run out on the penultimate ball of the match, with the Israelis still four short of victory.
