Cricket Espana has received a legacy grant for a festival of cricket across Spain on 15 May, 2011 thanks to the Marylebone Cricket Club and ICC.
The MCC's successful tour of Spain last year which included two matches at La Manga against the Spain National team and the other match against Cataluyna CC has provided Spain with a legacy grant. Cricket Espana will hold four different projects and to introduce Nationals as well as ex pats through local schools, colleges and clubs of Regions selected.
The planned events are in Madrid, Barcelona, Lanzarote and the Murcia/Valencia region where newly trained Level 1 coaches the event will assist the regions to work with local children; both boys and girls and develop more contact with schools of that area. Director of Junior Cricket Neil Brook has been one of the key driving forces and will be overseeing all the programmes in the four different regions.
The Madrid region will hold an event to introduce young children to cricket with support of PE Teachers and coaches from the area, between 20 and 30 children are expected to take part and the head of logistics for the event will be Manny Fernandez.
The second region will be Barcelona, they are hosting a Junior Cricket tournament with some additional coaching sessions. This event will be overseen by the President of the Cataluyna Cricket Association, Robert Masih, and Spanish international, Armaghan Khan who coached the Spanish under 17 squad in the ICC Europe Under 17 Division 2 the Isle of Man in 2010.
Lanzarote will be the third area to host and it is fantastic that the Lanzarote Cricket Board is supporting yet another Cricket Espana event .The Lanzarote Cricket Board will be organising a Junior cricket tournament through schools in the region.
And the final region will be Murcia/Valencia Region which the La Manga club will host. There will be coaching sessions in morning with seven a side soft ball tournament and a 20/20 tournament in the afternoon and Evening. There is great hope to encourage schools clubs throughout these two regions to encourage as many juniors to participate as possible.
Neil Brook who is the Director of Junior Cricket for Cricket Espana says: "With the support of the MCC Legacy Grant, I'm hoping we can build on what we have done in Spain already.
"With the Legacy, we can continue to introduce Cricket to as many Spanish Nationals as we can and hopefully one day achieved all our aims to have a Spanish National side made up of all born Nationals," states Brook.
Cricket Espana are also hoping to involve many volunteers supporting the event and manning stalls where parents can get involved, registering for intro to Cricket course or level and, talking with Umpires. Spanish cricket are also planning transportation for schools to attend each regional event, these schools will be supported through the Pepsi ICC Development programme.
Brook is thoroughly delighted that Cricket Espana has this chance with extra funding to develop the game in Spain. "Cricket Espana will assist every school who attends by donating equipment as well as having coaching support to help new schools develop Cricket in the region," added Brook.
