Sweden greets London teams
Across the weekend of June 28th - July 2nd, two well established London friendly teams, the Mighty Wanderers CC and Salix CC made the trip to Kolsva Sweden to play the hosts Guttsta Wicked CC in a triangular tournament.
The two English sides have been friendly opponents for more than ten years and the Wanderers are organised by Lars Smith, who has local ties with Sweden. Although Salix travel overseas for a tour ever year, this was the first for the Mighties.
Taking advantage of the fact that Ryanair fly to Vasteras, which is billed as Stockholm airport but is in fact more than 100km away, it just happens to be very handy for Guttsta, the most northerly permanent cricket ground in the world.
The hosts were fantastically accommodating to the two teams and a special mention must go to Hans Person who has persevered for many years to create a fantastic cricket ground with a grass strip out of virgin pine forest.
The weather did not smile kindly on the tournament but rain and cricket do somehow go together and three games were played. In the first the MWs pulled off a decent win against Salix, who then played the hosts in a delayed and very soggy 20-20 game that Salix won. On the final day persistent drizzle did not stop the Wanderers beating the hosts to win the triangular tournament.
All in all, a fabulous trip for everyone concerned and for any UK clubs that are thinking of gong overseas, we defiantly recommend contacting Guttsta for a wonderful weekend of cricket, barbeque.
Where else would you have to stop the game to see elk near the pitch?!
