This week, Guernsey, Denmark, Jersey and Sussex are contesting the ArabianCricket.com Under 13 Cricket Festival at the Sussex-owned Blackstone Academy ground.
Day One featured Guernsey U13s vs Sussex U12s and Jersey U13s vs Denmark U13s.
Guernsey batted first in their game and finished on 203 for 9 off their alloted 45 overs on a good batting track which later proved to be just a par score. Sussex demonstrated their first-class credentials with opener Barnes hitting 84 not out, helping Sussex to a 7 wicket victory inside 42 overs.
Guernsey Manager Tim Belton was happy with his side's performance but admitted his side were 30 runs short: "Our top 3 batters made good starts but failed to capitilise and make hundreds".
In the other match, Denmark batted first and made 207 all out with Jersey falling 7 runs short in a close encounter. Jersey Manager Chris Minty was gracious in defeat: "Our bowling extras cost us today but all credit to a fighting Denmark team, who never realised they were beaten".
Guernsey Development Manager Jason Shambrook was full of praise for the Festival, "It is so important for the players here to gain experience ahead of the European Under 15 tournaments. Time batting in the middle and bowling on good grass batting wickets is essential for each player's development. Special thanks must go to Sussex County Cricket Club & the sponsors, Arabian Cricket, for providing this opportunity".
