In the week that the clocks went back Cyprus Cricket Association looked forward!
Saturday November 6, 2010 saw 25 boys and girls aged from four to 11 years old being awarded T shirts, certificates and attendance medals, with the lucky ones receiving cups in recognition of their personal performances.
The course commenced on the 23 September with the support of the ICC, Cyprus Cricket Association, Heritage Private School, which made available its superb sports facilities, and the coaches.
The coaches addressed the age and ability of the children involved in the course. During the seven weeks of the course, that took place on Saturday mornings, the children were taught the basic skills of cricket and during each coaching session they played a game of Kwik Cricket. The supervising coach made enjoyment and safety the prime objectives with demonstrations being used to present skills to the participants. Feedback from the participants indicated that they had enjoyed themselves and learnt a lot.
The participants were at each session instructed in a "fun way" to appreciate the importance of "warm ups" and "warm downs" and indicated in the question and answer sessions that they understood the need for such activities.
By the end of the course, the coaches having taken account of the wide range of age and ability amongst the participants, had engineered an interest in cricket and helped the participants to develop skills ranging from throwing through to catching, bowling (both under and over arm) and batting.
The final session on 6 November was overseen by Terry Holt, the National Team Head Coach, and after fiercely fought but sporting games of Kwik Cricket the presentations were made in the presence of the parents and the inevitable photographer. Short speeches were made by the Headmasters of the school and the Chairman of Cyprus Cricket Association welcoming the next generation of cricketers in Cyprus.
