Girls first ever participation in Portuguese junior cricket

A year ago, a school, in a rural town called São Mamede in the centre of Portugal were doing a project on England and came across this exciting and intriguing game called cricket.

The school teacher they asked could not answer their questions, so they approached the Portuguese Cricket Federation; who went to demonstrate to the children involved. At the end of June 2009, two players, the secretary and a quick cricket equipment set from the Federation, travelled 150kms north of Lisbon and put on a cricket demonstration and resulted in around 50 children to join in and play; this included for the first time in Portugal, female participants.

The feedback was very positive and the school were keen on starting their own 'cricket club', with assistance from the cricket federation and permission from the school board; last month approval was given.

Two coaches volunteered and started coaching 14 children- five of whom were girls, this is the first time the girls have been involved in junior cricket in Portugal. A fantastic step in the right direction for not only women's cricket, but for Portuguese cricket as well.
