On 2 October the Dutch women’s cricket team departs to South Africa to take part in the inaugural Women’s Cricket Challenge tournament. They will play five ODIs and three T20 against Ireland, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies and South Africa.
The team: H. Rambaldo (capt.) V. Wattenberg (wk), M. Braat, L. Brouwers, E. Gerritse, C. de Groot, D. Hannema, E. de Lange, E. Lanser, M. Kornet, M. Nijman, D.Prins, A. Tanke, M. Veringmeier. Stand by in The Netherlands are N. Hennis, H, Hofman, A. Mol en C. Toussaint.
During this summer the women’s team played in the English County competition and earned promotion to Division 3. At the European Championships they secured a place in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier tournament in Bangladesh in November 2011.
The tournament in Potchefstroom will be another step forward and will face stronger opposition. Coach Ed de Moura Correia expects, due to the recent development of the team, to win at least 1ODI. "The last few weeks all the players have improved individually and team spirit is high. This can be attributed to their commitment and hard work. Taking part is crucial for The Netherlands as it will now meet ICC requirements for number of ODIs and T20s. The Netherlands are grateful to the ICC for staging this tournament".
The number of weekly central trainings has been raised to three and players work individually on their fitness levels. Each player has been given one specific task to improve (technical, tactical and/or mental). As Potchefstroom lies 1.350 meters above sea level it is important to acclimatise quickly. Upon arrival in South-Africa a special training schedule will help the players to prepare and acclimatise quickly.
Captain Helmien Rambaldo is looking forward to returning back to South Africa, where she once stuided. "It will be a challenge to play against teams that have been playing more frequently and better cricket these last 2 years. But we have gone a new route and it is an excellent opportunity to see where we stand".
