ICC European WCL Division 2 Championships are dominated by Guernsey

Wed, Jul 14, 2010 12:48 PM

For the second consecutive day Guernsey powered their way to victory, this time over Israel. Guernsey took advantage of morning cloud cover and damp conditions, inserting Israel and bowling them out for just 86 in 35.2 overs. The wickets were shared around the Guernsey attack. Israel set about their work in fine style, reducing the home side to 7 for 2, but calm was restored in an unbroken third wicket stand between skipper Stuart Le Prevost and youngster Tim Ravenscroft, who steered Guernsey to the winning post.

KGV Playing Fields, Rue Cohu, has proved an unhappy hunting ground for Gibraltar so far during this Division 2 Championships. Beaten comfortably there yesterday by Guernsey, today they lost to Germany. The pick of the Gibraltar bowlers was 16 year old Julian Freyone, who took four wickets. Despite this effort, the Germans still managed to score 271 before seeing their final wicket fall on the last ball of the allocated 50 overs. In reply Gibraltar fell 117 runs short. Farooq Ahmed starred with the ball for Germany, taking 5 wickets.

The tightest of the three games played on Day 2 of the Championships was battled out at College Field. Yesterday Norway held their nerve to bowl out Israel for a four run victory on the same ground. Today they failed to repeat the trick, losing to France by two wickets. Batting first the Norwegians were restricted to 196. Faisal Shehzad top scored with 35, ably supported by 32 from Iram Dawood. Shahid Malik's economic spell of 3 for 20 from 10 overs was crucial to the game. The French reply was built around Jonathan Houghton's 61. Usman Khan smashed the ball through midwicket for four to spark French celebrations on Bastille Day.
