Guernsey’s Tim Ravenscroft is busy preparing for the ICC European Division 1 Championship at Hampshire, as he aims to help the co-host become victorious in Division 1.
Currently playing for Hampshire 2nd XII it was from a relatively early age that Ravenscroft knew he had the talent for cricket. “My Dad has always been a keen cricketer and got me into it at an early age. I soon realised I had a knack for it and it pretty much started from there,” explained Ravenscroft.
As a young talent Ravenscroft was spotted by the Guernsey Cricket Board very early on, playing for them from then onwards, the support provided to the batsman is something he is very grateful of. “The Guernsey Cricket Board has been supporting me and helping me develop as soon as I became a part of it, I fully appreciate the help the Guernsey Cricket Board have given me,” said Ravenscroft.
The support provided by the Guernsey Cricket Board was of great value to a young talented Ravenscroft in order to develop his skills, “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the likes of Jason Shambrook, Cricket Development Manager and Mike Kinder former Development Officer - they gave me a great platform on which I have learnt about myself as a player. It has given me the opportunity to develop my techniques and skills to a high level,” said the Hampshire batsman.
At the age of 11, Ravenscroft was spotted by Hampshire coach Raj Muru when he made a visit to Guernsey and suggested that the young Guernsey boy should have a trial. “When Raj (Muru) suggested I should have a trial I was elated, I spent the next 5 years from 11-16 flying back and forth, until I decided to take a break from cricket.
“I then went back 2 years later and told them I was looking to make a career in the game, having already played at Academy level and for the second team; they were excited to have me back and offered me a contract,” said Ravenscroft.
Leading up to the ICC European Division 1 Championship, the Guernsey batsman has been preparing at Hampshire 2nd XI in some style. “So far I couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season, apart from a few hiccups in the last couple of weeks, runs have been aplenty and things are going really well. I’ve moulded myself as one of the main players in the second team and will hopefully make an appearance in the first team in the near future.
“Being at a club like Hampshire the competition is very high with a squad full of quality players, no matter which team you play in, all the players are a great bunch of guys and are always keen to help the youngsters such as myself out,” said Ravenscroft.
Ravenscroft and Guernsey have high hopes for the ICC European Division 1 Championship which kicks off next week in the Channel Islands. “I’m hoping if we play consistent cricket that we have a great chance of winning the competition. As this short form of the game can be so unpredictable anything can happen at any time so we are going to have to be switched on and execute plans well.
“The timing of this competition is great as I was not long ago involved with the T20 format in Hampshire. I’ve been pretty successful at this form of the game, including hitting a 51-ball 104 not out against Surrey so I believe I should be as well prepared as possible and looking forward to what hopefully should be a great week,” concluded Ravenscroft.
