Ireland U19 star Stuart Thompson believes his side is capable of causing a major upset at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand next month.
The all-rounder is part of the 15-man squad for the tournament, led by Andrew Balbirnie. Eight members of the squad have already been part of the 2008 event.
Ireland is placed in Group B, along with Australia, South Africa and the USA. The top two teams from each group qualify for the quarter finals while the bottom two participate in the Plate Competition.
Stuart said, in an interview with the Northern Constitution, the team is confident despite being in a challenging group: "Our goal is to cause a major upset in New Zealand. Obviously South Africa and Australia will be strong favourites in our group, but we honestly believe we can win at least one of those games. The senior side has shown a competitive belief when it comes to playing against the major cricket nations, and we want to continue that trend.?
"We have an extremely strong side, with eight players returning to the ICC U19 CWC, so the big game experience is there. We'll be hoping to put in two strong performances in the warm-up games against Afghanistan and the West Indies, and carry that momentum through to the competition."
