Eighteen months ago the Serbian Cricket Federation had an Introduction to Cricket course which was the start of a programme, first to create L1 cricket coaches and then to take the sport to schools and universities within Serbia. A course was booked for Friday 16 March- Monday 19th March 2012 and nine candidates participated in the event.
It all started with a safe hands course on the Friday evening where everyone had an interesting debate and discussed issues that can arise with the safeguarding and protection of children. The candidates all showed in in-depth knowledge of what is required in this department and the enthusiasm of everyone was something that was to carry on throughout the course.
The weather was a glorious 25c so we decided to run the programme outside within the grounds of a spectacular castle and thousands of people out for picnic, stroll and cycle beside the beautiful Danube that flowed just past deep square leg! We were quite a fascination to the Serbs who were not quite sure what to make of this unusual game that was being played!
The candidates took it all in their stride and throughout the two full days of the course showed enthusiasm and an ability to coach to quite high standards so it was obvious that they would all pass and become Serbian's first ever group of home grown cricket coaches. The country should be proud of how far they have come within a short time as they have organised many events throughout Serbia as well as courses with the Belgrade Police force and extensive cricket taster days with all the universities in Belgrade and with plenty of success.
The SCF are aware that improved facilities are paramount to the continued success of cricket in Serbia as well as accessing funding through government programmes and promoting cricket to younger students. They have been supported by ICC Europe and we look forward to seeing them grow as a cricket loving country and maybe one day cause the odd upset or two on the pitch. If their enthusiasm, dedication and determination is anything to go by, then the future looks bright.
