Guernsey all ready to host championship

The Netherlands will be looking to defend their 2011 ICC European U15 Division 1 title when the 2012 tournament gets underway in Guernsey on Sunday.

The Dutch will feature four sons of senior internationals amongst their ranks. Rens van Troost is the son of former Dutch captain Luuk van Troost and the nephew of former Somerset fast bowler Andre, whilst Zulfiqar Ahmed's triplet sons are all in the squad. The triplets all played with their father in a Dutch Topklasse match earlier this year, and if all play in the same match during this tournament, it will almost certainly be an unprecedented moment in international cricket.

Also set to star for the Dutch is 14 year old Daniel Doram, a tall left arm spinner from the Dutch Caribbean island of Sint Maarten. Doram has already played for the Netherlands Under-19 side, taking 1-12 in 10 overs against Jersey last month. Like the Zulfiqar triplets, he has also made his Topklasse debut this season.

Winners for three consecutive years between 2008 and 2010, Scotland will be looking to regain their title this year, and come into the event on the back of three wins in the U15 County Championship. Benjamin Wilkinson is their only returning player from last year's rain affected event in Stirling, Scotland.

Ireland, without a win in this event since 2007, have three returning players from last year. They will be joined by Sonny Cott who has already played several matches for Surrey age-group sides, and is the son of Boomtown Rats guitarist Gerry Cott. The side will be captained by Jack Tector.

The two Channel Island sides of Jersey and Guernsey are now well established in these youth tournaments, but are still without a win at U15 level. Jersey field a side with three returning players from last year, including captain Jonty Jenner.

Hosts Guernsey will no doubt be hoping to turn their home advantage into a first win at European Youth Division One level. Three players return from last year, including captain Alex Bushell and they will be coached by star Guernsey player Jeremy Frith.

Whatever the result though, all will be hoping that there is not a repeat of the rain that blighted last year?s event in Stirling. Only four matches were played, with four whole days being completely washed out. The weather forecast is looking OK at the moment, so it will be hoped that it stays that way and all matches go ahead.

The squads are as follows:

Guernsey: Alex Bushell (Captain); Harry Barrett Giles; Rory Brown; Will Fazakerly; Ryan Harris; Jack Ingrouille; Nathaniel Jones; Edward Lawrence; Andrew Oxburgh; Trystan Perkins; Dominic Rice; Barnaby Thompson; Thomas Veillard; Arun White
