The development of cricket for girls and women is seen by the International Cricket Council as an extremely important part of their global vision for cricket. Increasing participation numbers in this area will help to ensure the future of the game and assist many countries in their development projects.
The One Foundation have now sponsored the Jersey Cricket Board's intiative to develop the game with primary objectives to raise additional funding that would not otherwise go into the charitable system including clubs, associations and non profit making organisations. Assist in raising the profile and awareness of 'giving' in the Island. Provide an efficient and professionally operated vehicle to primarily assist individuals to make donations in the area of Education, Sport and Culture. Assist in providing a funding platform for Jersey 'stars' of the future.
Chris Minty, Chief Executive Officer of the Jersey Cricket Board, explained that even a small country like Jersey had a role to play. "We have had, for some years now, a good cricket development programme in Jersey and to have been able to expand that to encompass cricket for girls and women in line with ICC's plans has worked well. The programme has been led by Gemma Dunning, employed by the JCB to develop Girls and Women's cricket, and recent successes have made the project very worthwhile indeed," said Minty.
The women's team travelled to France in 2011 and won both matches, a girl's team travelled to the UK recently and won the plate competition in a Kwik Cricket, the women's team recently hosted France in Jersey and won a 30 over match and only last weekend attracted comments in European cricket circles by winning a European Women's Festival in Utrecht beating countries such as Germany, Belgium, Estonia, Gibraltar and a Netherlands Select team. Gemma Dunning was 'Player of the Tournament'.
Kevin Lemasney, Chairman of the One Foundation, "It is with pleasure that we announce that the One Foundation have sponsored the Jersey Cricket Boards initiative to develop Girls and Women's Cricket in the Island for 2012. The One Foundation would like to congratulate the Jersey Ladies Cricket team on their fantastic success in Utrecht," said Lemasney.
