After a successful event last year, Netherlands will hold its `Cricket on Ice' tournament on 10 January in Rotterdam. U15 cricket teams including HCC (The Hague), VOC (Rotterdam), Excelsior'20 (Schiedam) and VCC (Voorburg) will play each other on ice in a skating rink.
The playing surface is an artificial pitch laid down on ice in the middle, while the players wear sport shoes. The four teams play each other once, so therefore there will be six short, and undoubtedly very exciting cricket matches. A large number of players of the Dutch Lions U15 training squad will take part.
Marike Dickmann, who was responsible for this tournament together with former Dutch captain Roland Lefebvre, wants this event to be organized on a yearly basis. In an interview on KNCB website, he said: "It is quite an amazing event, especially at the moment, with the country being covered in snow and ice, everyone skating and waiting for the famous Eleven City skating race in Friesland to take place. These cricketers will be able to do what they like doing most of all: play cricket. For these talented Dutch cricketers, it doesn't matter if they play cricket on the grass in summer or on the ice in winter; as long as they can play the sport"
