Cricketers Across The Continent Ready To Celebrate European Cricket Day

A host of cricketing events and activities will be taking place across the continent to mark the inaugural European Cricket Day on Sunday 19 May.

Cricket enthusiasts from 31 European countries will take part in the celebratory day, which has been organised by ICC Europe, one of the International Cricket Council’s five regional offices which together aim to raise awareness, improve playing standards and increase participation in the sport around the world through the Pepsi ICC Development Programme.

Nick Pink, Regional Development Manager for ICC Europe, says: “While cricket enjoys mass popularity in many countries across the globe, it is still developing in others, which is where the International Cricket Council comes in.

“European Cricket Day is the first of what we hope will become an annual celebration of cricket, which will help to raise the game’s profile in our member countries, from Ireland to Israel, Spain to Sweden, and a great many places in between.”

The inaugural European Cricket Day has been timed to coincide with the fourth day of England’s Test with New Zealand at Lord’s, which will be attended by ICC Europe delegates invited to the match as guests of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

European Cricket Day comes hot on the heels of the launch of ICC Europe and Cricket for Change’s ‘Street 20 Europe’ project, which brings a street form of the Twenty20 format to young people in disadvantaged communities across mainland Europe.

One of the highlights of ICC Europe’s sporting calendar takes place later this summer, when 12 international Twenty20 teams will battle it out for the ICC European Division 1 Championship, culminating in a finals day involving the top four sides on Saturday 13 July at The County Ground in Hove, Sussex.
