Dockrell, Porterfield take Ireland to narrow win
Helped along by a handy 62 from William Porterfield, their captain, Ireland beat Scotland by one wicket in what turned out to be a thriller at Stormont, Belfast, in Match 51 of the World Cricket League Championship on Friday (September 6). Set a target of 224, Ireland reached there with just one delivery to spare.

Porterfield’s knock came off just 64 deliveries, as he set the pace for the rest of the chase, having helped his team to 98 at the start of the 20th over. Paul Stirling (30) and Porterfield, put on 95 for the opening wicket, as Ireland appeared to be cruising along, chasing a target that did not threaten to pose too much of a challenge.

However, Majid Haq and Iain Wardlaw managed to successfully put Ireland off its track, with the former finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 26 off ten overs. Cruising along at 98 for 1, Ireland suddenly found itself at a precarious 146 for 7, needing 78 of 85 deliveries with only the tail to follow.

However, much to Ireland’s delight, the tail did wag with some useful contributions from Trent Johnston (24), Max Sorensen (31), and Tim Murtagh (23*). Murtagh finished the game for Ireland in style, with a six and a four off consecutive deliveries, giving Ireland the 12 runs it required off the last over to win.

Earlier, Scotland, after winning the toss, lost wickets on a frequent basis, with the only performance of note coming from Preston Mommsen, who remained unbeaten on 91 having come in at number 4. Matt Machan (27) and Safyaan Sharif (26) made some quick runs, but it wasn’t enough to get Scotland to a big score.

George Dockrell impressed with a spell of 10-2-24-4 for Ireland.

After the defeat, Scotland now finds itself out of the reckoning for an automatic qualification for the 2015 World Cup. It will now have to travel to New Zealand in January to take part in the World Cup Qualifiers and will have to register a victory in each of the two ODIs it plays.
