At the Channel Islands Sports Awards held on 30th January 2014, Jersey Cricket was named SGPB Hambros Senior Team of the Year for the second time.
The field for Senior Team of the Year was so strong this year that five teams were shortlisted: Jersey Cricket, Jersey Swimming, Guernsey Ladies Hockey, Guernsey Cycling and Guernsey FC.
However Jersey’s victory in the Inter-Insular against Guernsey and their domination of World Cricket League Division 6 saw Captain Peter
Gough lift the award at the Radisson Hotel in Jersey.
Gough said, “It's difficult to know what has made the difference in the last few years, but in 2011 after the Guernsey inter-insular we were beaten heavily. We lost over there and it was probably one of the lowest points we had . But we stuck with that same group we had and it's shown the benefit of having tough times, putting the extra work in and that same group of players has come through and done well. The effort and persistence with that group has paid off, and the players have put so
much commitment and training in that without that I don't think we'd have had the success we had over the summer.”
Jersey travel to Malaysia later this month to compete in World Cricket League
Division 5 and are determined to continue their good form there.
