On the second day of the ICC Cricket World League Division Five at Royal Selangor Club, Kuala Lumpur it a nerve-wrecking end for Nigeria as they had to wait till the last over to win against Guernsey. Olajide Bejide scored a six off Matthew Stokes final over to secure victory.
Endurance Ofem was the man-of-the-match for Nigeria as he recorded three wickets and helped Nigeria to limit Guernsey’s runs to 192 runs help Nigeria win by two wickets.
“I’m happy we won but I thought we would have been able to win it earlier. We gave too many wickets away at the end but the good thing is that we won.
“Saheed Akolode was impressive with his bowling and we hope that this momentum will continue in the coming games,” said Ofem.
Though they lost, Guernsey’s captain Jamie Nussbaumer was pleased with his team’s work ethic on another tough day for the side.
“It was hot out there. We possibly missed out on the batting but the guys didn’t give up the last minute and I can’t fault them for that.
“It was a cracking game between two very even sides and Nigeria fully deserved the win. I wish them luck for the rest of tournament,” said Nussbaumer
Nussbaumer said that he has fond of Bayuemas Ground and he hopes that his side would be able to beat Tanzania in the next game.
Oladatun Olatunji (40) and Olajide Bejide (31) were the top scorers with the bat. Ofem and Shaheed Akolade got three wickets each for Nigeria as they toppled Guernsey’s batting order.
Lucas Barker scored 45 runs for Guernsey while Lee Ferbrache scored 27 runs. Nussbaumer impressed with three wickets but it was enough to beat the Africans.
In other ICC World Cricket League Division Five matches played on Friday, Malaysia’s veteran batsman Sheikh Nasir Shafiq scored a whopping 151 runs to lead his side to 213 runs victory over Cayman Islands.
Hassam Ghulam Muhammad also impressed by getting four wickets as Cayman Islands couldn’t counter Malaysia’s impressing batting and bowling performance. Cayman Islands could only score 120 runs and they’ve yet to collect any points so far in the tournament.
