This week saw the launch of a new sports initiative, the Primary Ambassador Programme. The programme is coordinated by the Jersey Cricket Board (JCB) and aimed at encouraging the island’s
primary school teachers to become ‘Ambassadors’ for cricket.
The scheme is wholly sponsored by Rathbone Investment Management International, as part of their
on-going commitment to promoting sporting activities and community initiatives in the Island.
Commenting on the sponsorship Jonathan Giles, Managing Director of Rathbones said, “We are delighted to sponsor this new project and in doing so help to promote better coaching for primary
school children. Providing opportunities to further educate the teachers responsible for developing and encouraging the children can only have a great positive impact.”
Eighteen primary schools have signed up to take part in the Ambassador Programme and the first event, which took place on Monday 3rd March, saw participants take part in an International Cricket Council Introduction to Cricket Course for teachers, run by Lee Meloy Development Officer for the Jersey Cricket Board. The course is designed to give the teachers a better knowledge of warm ups, games and provide them with a range of skills to use in PE lessons at school.
Discussing the Ambassador Programme Lee Meloy said, “This is the first year we have introduced the Ambassador initiative and we are delighted with the response we’ve had so far. The programme
aims to target one or two teachers from each primary school and the Ambassadors will then be our and the Jersey Primary Schools Cricket Association’s first point of contact for any cricket related matters. Working together in this manner will also help develop a network for the schools, enabling them to discuss and organise various fixtures and tournaments. We are hoping that over the coming years we will be able to expand the programme to all teachers in primary and secondary schools.”
Thanks to the financial contribution made by Rathbones all participating teachers will receive access to the coaching courses, t-shirts, kit bags and coaching activity cards. They will also be offered places on the JCB Coaching in Schools Programme, which runs from January to July.
