Unbeaten since Division six, Jersey continued that momentum and won the ICC Cricket World League Division Five title after trouncing Malaysian by 71 runs.
Unbeaten in 12 Cricket World League matches, the side led by Peter Gough will hope to continue that form in Singapore
Jersey won the toss and elected to bat as Peter Gough and Nathaniel Watkins were the opening batsmen for Jersey. However, Jersey were jolted in the first over itself after Hiran Rallalange took out Jersey’s captain Gough in just three balls.
After that, Jersey set the tone when Nathaniel Watkins (116) and Ben Stevens (84) impressed by notching consecutive runs but after Watkins was taken out by Kizar Hayat Durrani, Malaysia managed to keep the runs at 247.
Kizar Hayat was the star for Malaysia in that innings as he got five wickets. Hassan Gulam recorded two wickets for Malaysia.
In the second innings, Jersey’s bowler did the job when they only allowed Malaysia to get 176 runs to clinch the tie and bring home title.
Shafiq Sharif impressed with the bats with 62 runs while Ahmad Faiz Mohammad got 32 runs but the other players disappointed with the bats and couldn’t counter Jersey’s on-form bowlers.
Ben Stevens continued his scintillating form with the wickets as he got 3 wickets. vStevens deservedly won the player of the tournament trophy after notching 403 runs and 12 wickets throughout the tournament.
“Team performance was stunning today. Everybody was playing for pride and we wanted to win the tournament. After six games, I’m proud of everything that we’ve done,” said Stevens.
Stevens said that momentum I huge in cricket and they hope to continue their good form in Singapore and they believe they can win that itself.
Ahmad Faiz Mohammad Noor was disappointed as their run rate was poor today and wishes they could do better today.
“I’m a little bit happy because we’re promoted to division four. To win or lose today’s game, our team is already looking forward to division four” he said
Ahmad Faiz said that Syeikh Nasir Shafiq was the star man for Malaysia in this tournament with his run rates.
“We’re looking forward to see more performers for the next tournament and we hope to do well in Singapore this June,”
