Jersey and Netherlands are promoted to Pepsi ICC Europe U19 Division 1
Jersey and Netherlands have been promoted to Pepsi ICC Europe U19 Division 1 after an exciting week’s cricket in Essex, where there were runs and wickets galore.
The seven venues Coggeshall CC, Colchester CC, Frinton CC, Halstead CC, Kelvedon and Feering CC, Mistley CC and University of Essex Cricket Pitches hosted a very successful tournament with some fantastic performances on show.
Jersey who had a 100% record winning all five matches, defeated Denmark by 8 wickets in its last fixture confirming their promotion place. Led by captain Jonty Jenner who put in some outstanding performances throughout the week, starting off with 34 not out against Italy leading his side to victory, followed by 120 against rivals Guernsey in 75 balls with 11 fours and 4 sixes. Scoring more runs with 70 against Netherlands ensured the Jersey team stayed on course for top spot. Stand out bowler for Jersey was Benjamin Ward getting figures of 4 wickets for 33 runs in 10 overs in a tightly fought match against the Dutch.
Netherlands’ beat Guernsey on the last day of competition, but were already promoted due to Denmark’s defeat. With three wins in the tournament it confirmed Netherlands promotion in second spot. Sikander Zulfiqar one of the most valuable players for the Netherlands impressed scoring 77 runs against Italy and 58 against Jersey; one of three triplets playing for the Dutch in the competition.
Denmark had a strong tournament finishing third and still had hopes of promotion going into the last fixture, before coming up against a strong Jersey side. Denmark’s highlight was Saif Ali Ahmed’s innings scoring a blistering 151 runs in 142 balls against Italy, leading Denmark to a monstrous 341-6 total on Thursday. Ahmed was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the tournament.
Guernsey who brought an inexperienced squad went away with one victory under their belt and would have learnt a lot from the tournament, whilst Italy finished in fifth place.
Jersey and the Netherlands will now join Ireland and Scotland in Pepsi ICC Europe U19 Division 1 to be held in 2015, where the winner will directly qualify for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. The team finishing second will go into a qualifying tournament with teams from the other regions.
