Former champion Scotland defeated Canada by 29 runs in the ICC Intercontinental Cup opener with a day to spare at Mannofield Park, Aberdeen on Saturday.

On a day when fortunes swung from one end to another, Canada started its second innings on Saturday morning in pursuit of 243 runs and the entire team was bowled out for 213 in the 78th over of the penultimate day.

The victory gave Scotland 20 points from the match and helped it retain its unbeaten run against Canada in the four-day format. The two teams will now play two ODIs at the same venue on 7 and 8 July.

For Scotland, wickets were evenly shared between Richie Berrington (2-20), Moeeb Iqbal (2-31), Calum MacLeod (2-36) and Jan Stander (2-48) while for Canada one-down batsman Sandeep Jyoti was the top scorer with 47 while Shaheed Keshvani (34) and Geoff Barnett (31) were the other major contributors.

Canada was always under pressure when opener Geoff Barnett had to limp off the ground at the score of 22-0 with a bad back. His return provided Scotland the opening it was looking for as it claimed four quick wickets for 38 runs to leave the tourists in trouble at 60-4.

Jyoti, who struck seven fours in a 125-ball knock, in association with Khurram Chohan (28) got involved in a rescue act and added 64 runs for the fifth wickets to put Canada back on track.

The departure of Jyoti at the scores of 124, however, rocked the visitors again as it lost Chohan and captain Umar Bhatti in a space of 23 balls to be reduced to 133-7. At this stage, wicketkeeper Ashif Mulla (27) and Keshvani joined hands and kept the Canadians' in the hunt by putting on 42 runs for the eighth wicket.

The departure of Mulla made the scorecard read 175-8 and brought Barnett back on the wicket. The 25-year-old left-hander, together with Keshvani, took the score to 198 before the latter was run-out to leave Canada still requiring 45 for victory with last pair at the crease.

Barnett tried his best and played a few sizzling strokes but tried one stroke too many to be cleaned up by MacLeod with Canada falling 29 runs short.

Scores in brief:

Scotland 185 (Gordon Drummond 52, Ryan Watson 37, Simon Smith 29 not out, Fraser Watts 21; Khurram Chohan 6-37, Kenry Osinde 2-63) and 199 (Jan Stander 64, Gordon Drummond 34; Rizwan Cheema 3-39, Khurram Chohan 3-50, Shaheed Keshvani 2-20)

Canada 142 (Rizwan Cheema 24, Khurram Chohan 23 not out; Calum MacLeod 4-66, Jan Stander 3-43, Drummond 2-22) and 213 (Sandeep Jyoti 47, Geoff Barnett 31, Khurram Chohan 28, Ashif Mulla 27, Shaheed Keshvani 34; Moneeb Iqbal 2-31, Calum MacLeod 2-36, Richie Berrington 2-20, Jan Stander 2-48)
