Ireland and Scotland opened its ICC European Championship U/19 CWCQ Division 1 campaigns on Tuesday with wins over the Netherlands and hosts Jersey respectively, but the outstanding result of the day was Denmark's desperately close two-wicket victory over Guernsey.
Despite losing its openers to A Hutchinson (3-27) early on, skipper Sair Anjum top-scored with 33 runs in 31 balls to take his side to victory with seven overs to spare. Earlier, M Ali (3-37) and I Sawmy (3-22) were the pick of the bowlers for Denmark to help limit the opposition to 143.
Scotland beat Jersey by 18 runs helped largely by a half century from F Coleman (84) to take the final tally to 217. In response, the hosts could only manage 199-8 despite a half century from skipper AW Hawkins-Kay (60).
In the final game of the day, Ireland's S Thompson (65) smashed a brilliant half century to help his side win by seven-wickets over Netherlands. Earlier, Ireland's SC Getkate (4-39) struck in the middle overs to collapse the Dutch innings to 169 in less than 40 overs despite a valiant 51-ball century from Dutch opener Alex Kervezee.
