An unbeaten half century by opening Dutch batter Violet Wattenberg paved the way for a five-wicket win over Scotland at North County on day two of the ICC Europe Women's Championship 2009. The wicket keeper played an innings of genuine quality, working the ball into the gaps, and striking the occasional boundary as she top scored with her 87 in 110 balls.
Put on to bat, Scotland posted a challenging 228-7 in 50 overs, with valuable contributions from skipper Kari Anderson (63), Leigh Kasperek (58) and Kathryn White (40 in 43 balls). Mandy Kornet (2-28) was the pick of the bowlers for the Netherlands.
In reply, the Dutch attained the set total with five overs to spare and the loss of just five wickets. Wattenberg was ably supported in her innings by opener Cheraldine Oudolf (28) and later by Marijn Nijman (40 in 43 deliveries). The Scottish bowling performance was hampered by poor fielding that provided the perfect platform for a Netherlands' win.
The wicket takers for Scotland were Kathryn White (1-38), Lynne Dickson (1-40), Kari Anderson (1-46), and Fiona Urquhart (1-46).
A very impressive batting performance from the Netherlands, but it will need to seriously improve on its bowling display to defeat Ireland on Wednesday at the Hills for the title.
