Unbeaten half centuries by Belgium opening batsmen Nirvam Shah and Jamie Farmiloe steered their side to the European Championship U/19 Division 2 title in Antwerp on Sunday, completing a ten-wicket victory over Italy on the final day of competition.
Winning the toss, Italy elected to bat and was bowled out for 161 in 46.4 overs with only Roshendra Suroshan Abeywickrama (56) being able to put up some resistance to a tight bowling display by Belgium. Akshat Sanghvi led the bowling attack, picking up 4-34 to finish as the leading wicket-taker in the competition.
In reply, the hosts had to achieve the set total without the loss of a single wicket to finish ahead of Isle of Man on net run rate. Skipper Nirvam Shah posted 86 in 100 balls and was well-supported by Farmiloe (59 in 85 balls) to coast to victory with more than 19 overs to spare.
Abeywickrama was the tournament's leading run-scorer with 261 runs at an average of 52.20. Having also taken ten wickets at an average of 9.50, he was unsurprisingly named as Player of the Tournament.
In the other games of the day, Israel defeated Gibraltar by 136 runs at Hombeek to be placed fifth in the event. Posting a target of 194 to win, a five-wicket haul by Shifron Waskar helped his side limit Gibraltar to just 57 in 20.4 overs.
France also completed a ten-wicket victory over Germany in a Twenty20 match played at Lasne. Chasing 97 to win, an unbeaten 66 in 33 balls by skipper Jonathon Houghton helped his side reach the target in only 12 overs. The win cemented a fourth place for France in the tournament.
